CAMS Nationals

ROUND 1 of the 2018 CAMS Australian Motor Racing Nationals will be huge.

There’s really no other way to say it – it’s a race meeting with something for everyone.

Whether you like endurance racing, GT cars, open-topped LeMans style sports cars, the young stars of open-wheel racing or classic, Aussie V8’s Sandown’s Shannons Nationals opener has you sorted.

A record-breaking 8 different national categories will compete across a two-day spectacular this April.

Headlining the show will be the second running of the Sandown 3 Hour Classic enduro for the production-based vehicles of the Australian Manufacturers Championship (AMChamp).

The Sandown 3-hour will see Mitsubishi’s four-wheel-drive turbo Lancers up against BMW sixes and Aussie V8’s – all racing as if they’ve just driven off the showroom floor.

New cars racing this year include a VF HSV GTS and a stunning, rotary-powered Mazda RX8.

The three hour is a tough test for the AMChamp racers and one of the hardest races to win all year – so the competition will be fierce as in the tradition of Sandown’s great endurance races over the past 50 years.

Sandown also has a great tradition of embracing the mighty V8 – both in Touring Car and Sports Sedan form.

The Kumho V8 Touring Cars return to Sandown after a year away, continuing the traditional Holden-versus-Ford battle that is almost as old as time itself.

These ex-V8 Supercars have plenty of history and drivers that range from those that race them for fun to the next-generation of young stars coming through the ranks.

The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series produces incredible racing from Australia’s fastest tin tops – they’ll be touching nearly 300km/hr down the back straight when they hit the track this March.

The Iconic Alfa Romeo GTV of Tony Ricciardello will once again go into battle with old rival Darren Hossack (Audi – Chev) and a strong field of the wildest cars around.

Open wheel fans will get the best experience, too – two key steps in the open-wheel ladder to compete on the same program throughout much of the  Shannons Nationals.

The Australian Formula Ford Series and the Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship – for Australia’s fastest racing cars – will both feature on-track and provide thrill-a-minute racing from the talented youngsters in the sport all trying to make a name for themselves in the sport.

Add to this list the one-make Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, the open-top V8 and four-cylinder sports cars of the Radical Australia Cup and the six-cylinder Holden-v-Ford war of the Dial Before You Dig Australian Super Six Touring Car Series, and you get an idea of how big the program really is.

Its round one for all the national categories – the cars will be brand new, the drivers fresh and the show should be good.

Make sure you’re at Sandown this March so you don’t miss a second of the action.
